Windsurfers set to compete for National Titles

by Jodie Bakewell-White

Tom Ashley came out on top at Singapore Airlines Sail Auckland 2010, but just two weeks on, it’s all on again with the RS:X National Championships starting tomorrow.

Manly Sailing Club is hosting this year’s RS:X and Techno National Championships with all of New Zealand’s top male windsurfers competing including Olympic Gold medallist Tom Ashley, former world number one JP Tobin and Antonio Cozzolino. Overseas sailors from Germany, Italy, Korea and New Caledonia have registered.

Kate Ellingham, Jazmine Lynch and Stefanie Williams are competing in the women’s division sailing the RS:X 8.5 rig. Youth sailors, including Olly Gunman and Sven Pedersen, will also sail the 8.5 rig.

RS:X sailors will hit the water tomorrow. Up to twelve races will be sailed with three races per day possible over the next four days. The Techno Championships featuring New Zealand’s aspiring young windsurfers start Friday and run for three days.

Early predictions are that windsurfers will be tested with two days of lighter breeze and two days of strong winds. The National titles will be decided as the regatta wraps up on Sunday.
