Sturm, Stunts und Sieg beim Saisonstart auf dem Schwerinersee

This was the perfect start to the multihull sailing season in northern Europe. The high pressure area, which had been loyal for weeks here in the north, also gave us the best possible weekend of sailing conditions.

We are Nordic fresh, so we were used to the easterly wind with strong gusts on Lake Schwerin. It was so cold and strong that we, and many other teams, performed rotations, stunts and plunges with the Tornado. However, somehow we were able to survive the course without major failures, and won the first regatta of the season in the Tornado with positions of 2-1-1-1-1-1.

However, there were many capsizes in the field of Tornados, Hobie Cats and Top Cats. And the water was really cold, so we all had our eyes on each other to ensure that nothing happened. We all wanted to sail to the front of the fleet, but the sailing conditions were a real challenge. The sudden gusts which shot down over the forest, on the banks, across the water, in particular, saw one or another boat capsize.

For many it was already over after the first day of racing. Either material failure or slight damage to the body made further sailing impossible. Our hands were soon cut and open and the bruises on the body we can no longer count. Even now, everything hurts. However, that is precisely what occurs on these fast catamarans. There is much to tear with the sheets and halyards. You have to pack up quickly so that the boat is not out of control.

We are pleased that we have all finished safely and that we could start the season with a victory in front of the beautiful castle of Schwerin.

This week we will go to St Petersburg to the Conference of the International Sailing Federation ISAF. There, the final vote on the sailing disciplines for the Olympic Games 2016 will be held.

It happened that the winning teams in the Tornado, Hobie Cat and Top Cat were all mixed teams at the Cat Cup in Schwerin. Sailing as a couple is simply a lot of fun. We think: This must be an Olympic sport. In seven days we will know...
